Pick one that is too large and you carry dead weight across terrain that does not need it. A tank sprayer is the core tool for weed control, fertiliser application and pest management on any property. What Property Size Should Determine Your Tank Capacity?

Capacity matching is not complicated but most buyers get it wrong by defaulting to bigger is better. A 200-litre tank applying at 100 litres per hectare covers 2 hectares per fill. If your property needs 10 hectares treated, you refill 5 times per session. That is 5 stops, 5 mixing events and significant time lost. A 1,000-litre tank covers that same 10 hectares in one fill. Skid-mounted units sitting in a ute tray are the most flexible option for mixed terrain properties. They transfer between vehicles, sit low and give you access to both flat paddock areas and tighter bush sections. Never choose a platform that outweighs your vehicle’s rated tow or tray capacity. Diaphragm pumps handle intermittent duty well and tolerate chemical contamination. They are the right choice for spot spraying, fence line work and irregular-use property maintenance tasks where the pump runs for short periods. Roller pumps deliver higher flow rates and suit continuous duty broadacre spraying. Centrifugal pumps move the highest volumes and suit large-scale operations with boom setups, but they cannot self-prime and need to be positioned below the tank outlet. It handles the range of tasks without overcomplicating the system.

Does Material Construction Actually Affect Long-Term Value?

Polyethylene tanks outlast steel in agricultural chemical environments. Steel rusts. Chemical residues accelerate rust. UV exposure degrades paint. A quality linear polyethylene tank with UV stabiliser additives will typically last 10 to 15 years in outdoor conditions. Poly tanks also will not contaminate your spray mix with rust particles, which protects nozzles and pump internals. Stainless steel is the premium option for chemical compatibility and longevity. It suits high-value operations where contamination risk is unacceptable. For standard property maintenance, UV-stabilised poly is the right material choice at the right price point. Do not pay for stainless unless you have a specific contamination concern.

What Hose Length and Reel Setup Do You Actually Need?

Hose reel length determines how far from your vehicle you can reach a target. A 20-metre hose reaches most fence lines and spot weed locations from a parked ute. A 50-metre hose lets you treat larger areas from a single vehicle position, which reduces drive time across rough terrain. Manual rewind reels work fine on low-use setups. Spring-rewind reels are faster on high-use operations where you are deploying and rewinding the hose repeatedly through a working day. Hose diameter affects flow. 12-millimetre hose at 20 metres restricts flow noticeably compared to 19-millimetre hose. If you are running a high-flow pump for volume work, match your hose diameter to the pump output or you lose pressure at the nozzle.

How Do You Know When a Sprayer Is Correctly Calibrated?

Calibration is the step that most property owners skip and then wonder why results are inconsistent. Calibration tells you the actual output of your sprayer at a specific speed, pressure and nozzle combination. The process takes 20 minutes. Fill the tank with water. Mark your speed by timing a 100-metre pass. Catch nozzle output in a measuring jug for 30 seconds. Multiply by 120 to get litres per hectare. If it does not match your target rate, adjust speed or pressure and repeat. Do this every time you change nozzles, every season and whenever pump output feels different. What Maintenance Habits Extend the Life of Any Tank Sprayer?

Triple rinsing a sprayer tank after every use is not optional. Chemical residues left in tanks, hoses and nozzle bodies deteriorate seals, clog filters and contaminate your next spray mix. Flush with clean water three times, running each rinse through the pump and boom. After the season, drain all liquid and store hoses coiled without kinks. Nozzle bodies should be removed and soaked in clean water seasonally to dissolve crystallised chemical deposits. Check diaphragm condition on the pump annually. A cracked diaphragm does not always fail dramatically. It just reduces pump efficiency slowly until output drops enough to affect your application rate. Catching that early costs a few dollars. Missing it costs a pump replacement.
